Invisible Disability Awareness Week – October 2026
This week marks Invisible Disability Awareness Week. Many of our members, fellow legal professionals, families and friends will know someone living with an invisible illness or disability. It is important that every member feels included and that the Doncaster & District Law Society remains a welcoming environment for all.
Understanding invisible disabilities
Working in a professional role while living with an invisible illness or disability can be difficult to manage. As many of our members will know, legal work can be stressful, and these pressures may have a physical or emotional impact on colleagues and members of our community living with hidden conditions.
Navigating a flare up of symptoms and managing symptoms while working can be difficult but many colleagues and members continue to work hard with the understanding of their fellow colleagues. By raising awareness together, we can help others to understand the challenges involved and provide support to one another as a community.
Many disabilities are not immediately apparent, and colleagues may therefore be unaware that someone has a condition or disability unless that person chooses to tell them. By approaching others with understanding, respect and empathy, we can help create a more supportive professional community.
Making our events more inclusive
We recognise that some social and networking events may not be suitable or accessible for everyone. The Doncaster & District Law Society is therefore mindful of inclusivity when planning upcoming events, taking account of the varied needs of our members, colleagues and friends.
The Doncaster & District Law Society would like to continue to bring inclusion to our local community and ensure that all members feel welcome. If you have any mobility needs or adjustment queries, please do not hesitate to contact the committee.
Join the conversation
Our newly elected Equality, Diversity and Inclusion Officer, Liam Bawden, will be sharing blog posts through the Doncaster & District Law Society’s social media channels to raise awareness across our legal community. Members who would like to share their experiences or help us recognise forthcoming awareness days are encouraged to contact the committee. The committee would like to work collaboratively with our members to broaden understanding and promote inclusion.
Members may also wish to connect with organisations such as the Disabled Solicitors Network at The Law Society, which provides support and raises awareness of disability within the legal profession. Together, we can help build a legal community in which everyone feels welcome and understood.
